Diagnostic Testing Referrals from Houston Dyslexia LLC
If a learning disability is suspected or an individual struggles with literacy despite sound instruction, it is highly recommended and best practice that the person receives a full battery diagnostic evaluation. The purposes of a full diagnostic evaluation are to determine what is interfering with learning, create a plan of intervention, and for documentation. Documentation can help determine if someone is eligible to receive special education services, accommodations and modifications at school, college, and the workplace. Please note that in Texas, districts are required to consider outside diagnostic testing but are not required to accept a private diagnostician’s findings. You may find out how to request a Full Initial Individual Evaluation (FIIE) that is free for your child within your school district below. Please note that the evaluation is only as good as the evaluator. Throughout my career, I have found that diagnostic testing from highly-regarded diagnosticians is far more helpful for a plan of intervention than public school testing. I included instructions below on how to request a Full Initial Individual Evaluation (FIIE) from public schools. There is a specific way to to request an FIIE to ensure that your child receives it in rather than just a screening or assessment. CALTs and Reading Therapists are not qualified to administer diagnostic assessments unless they have additional credentials or licenses. CALTs and Reading Therapists can provide screening and assessments. Therefore, I have provided information for highly qualified diagnosticians who have been vetted and are highly regarded in the field.
