Dyslexia Therapy and Intensive Reading Tutor Memorial and Spring Branch, Houston
A one-on-one learning environment with an experienced, certified instructor is often one of the best ways for children to overcome academic difficulties caused by learning disabilities such as dyslexia.
Whether it’s difficulty with reading, spelling, or writing, a highly-trained instructor can be the difference between prospering in the classroom or struggling at school. I provide dyslexia academic therapy and Structured Literacy tutoring, which is different than traditional tutoring.
My name is Natalie. For over 20 years, I’ve worked inside and outside the classroom to help families and their children understand and remediate dyslexia near Memorial and Spring Branch as well as the greater Houston area. I am a Reading Therapist and a Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT), which means I have extensive training and experience that qualifies me to work with students who have difficulties with literacy, especially students with language-based learning disabilities and learning differences. I am certified in Texas as a Special Education, General Education, and ESL Teacher. Please see my About section to learn more about my experience, and visit my testimonials page to find out how I’ve helped families in Houston.
How Do Sessions Work?
I provide academic dyslexia therapy or Structured Literacy Tutoring based on individual needs. I use a Structured Literacy approach, which encompasses the Orton-Gillingham approach. This approach meets the rigorous standards of the International Dyslexia Association and the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council. “Structured literacy (SL) teaching is the most effective approach for students who experience unusual difficulty learning to read and spell printed words. The term refers to both the content and methods or principles of instruction . . . ” 1 Literacy is broken down into manageable patterns and structures in a systematic manner. Reading, writing, and spelling are taught in a way that is more accessible to dyslexic learners as well as struggling readers.
I have Orton-Gillingham-based training from Neuhaus Education Center. The Orton-Gillingham approach is a hallmark of effective dyslexia instruction. It includes phonemic awareness, sound-symbol (phoneme-grapheme) correspondences, patterns and conventions of print (orthography), morphology, syntax, and semantics. My methods of instruction are direct and explicit, systematic and cumulative, multisensory, and diagnostic and prescriptive.
Using a diagnostic-prescriptive approach, I assess children's and adult’s strengths and areas of needed support to tailor the program to address their specific needs while also capitalizing on his/her strengths.

Understanding Dyslexia as a Learning Disability
Dyslexia is not an uncommon learning disability. It is estimated that about one in five people have dyslexia. Some characteristics of dyslexia can include difficulty with phonological awareness, reading words accurately and fluently, and poor spelling. It can have secondary consequences such as difficulty understanding and acquiring vocabulary. Dyslexia is neurobiological in origin and is often unrelated to cognitive abilities.
Although dyslexia is lifelong since it is neurobiological in origin, it is often remediated if a child has the right tools, methods, and a highly-trained instructor to tutor him or her using academic therapy.
I offer one-on-one dyslexia and intensive reading remediation sessions near Memorial and Spring Branch, Houston, to help your child succeed. Please visit my dyslexia page to learn more about dyslexia and related information.
One Testimonial:
“Our family had the pleasure of meeting and working with Natalie when our daughter was in third grade. Our daughter,Maeve, still refers to her as her “favorite teacher ever.” Maeve has dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia. Natalie was not only educated about these learning differences she was able to teach Maeve using methods and techniques that allowed her to excel. Natalie is an energetic, caring and patient teacher that changed Maeve’s outlook on school.”
